Dante Alighieri
How an exile from Florence wrote his way from Hell to the stars.
Born Florence, Kingdom of Italy
About
Dante Alighieri was born in Florence in 1265, into a city rich, proud, and endlessly quarrelsome. As a young man he fell in love with Beatrice, a young Florentine woman he barely spoke to but never stopped adoring. She died young, and Dante turned his grief into poetry, first in a small book called La Vita Nuova.
