Privacy Policy
We built Literary Atlas to help you read and explore literature, not to harvest your data. This page says plainly what the app and this website collect, why, who else is involved, and how you stay in control.
1. Who we are
Literary Atlas is an app for iPhone, with an Android version in testing, developed and operated by Boris Prosper (boris.prosper@gmail.com). "We", "our" and "us" in this policy mean Boris Prosper as the sole developer and data controller.
2. What we collect and why
You can explore the whole atlas without an account. An account is needed to keep a library, post comments, and subscribe to Premium.
Account and profile
When you create an account with Sign in with Apple, Sign in with Google, or an email address and password, we store the email address and the user id the sign-in provider gives us. Apple lets you hide your real address behind a relay address, and we never see the hidden one.
You can also fill in a profile: a display name, an avatar chosen from the app's own figures or your initials, a birth year, a country, favorite genres, a language, and whether you want news from us by email. All of it is optional except the display name, which appears next to anything you post. Birth year and country only tune the reading level and the suggestions you see.
Reading progress, library and goals
Your reading positions, bookmarks, highlights, reading days and streaks, game scores, and the list of books in your library (title, author, cover) are saved to your account so they follow you to a new phone. This data is stored with our database provider, Supabase.
Imported ebook files
Ebook files you import (EPUB, plain text, HTML, Markdown) are stored on your device. We do not open or read the contents of your books.
If you subscribe to Literary Atlas Premium, each imported book is also copied to your own private cloud library on our servers, so your shelf can be restored when you switch phones. These files are private to your account: only you, signed in, can access them. Deleting a book from your library deletes its cloud copy. Without Premium, your books stay on your device and are never uploaded.
What you post
Comments, ratings, quizzes you generate, and game scores are public: other readers see them with your display name and avatar. Everything else in this policy is private to you.
Premium subscription
Payment is handled entirely by Apple or Google; we never see your card. To know that your Premium is active we keep the transaction id and expiry date that Apple or Google give us, tied to your account.
Notifications
Reading reminders are scheduled on your device and never leave it. If you allow notifications, the app also registers your device for alerts about new books and authors. That stores a device push token with your platform, language, reading level and, when signed in, your user id. These alerts are delivered through Expo's push service, and you can turn them off any time in Account › Notifications, which removes the token.
Usage and error reports
The app records a small set of usage events, such as an app open, a book page viewed, the Premium sheet shown, or a setting changed. Each event carries a random id created on your device, your user id when you are signed in, the platform, the app version and the language. No third-party analytics or advertising SDK is involved; these events go to our own database and are used only to understand which features are used and to fix problems. They are deleted after 180 days.
When the app hits an error, a short report is saved with the error message, the app version, the platform, what the app was doing, and your user id when signed in. It never includes your reading content or your books. Error reports are deleted after at most 90 days.
Features that stay on your phone
Read-aloud narration, tap-to-translate, and the AI recaps and word explanations run on your device with Apple's own frameworks. Your reading never leaves your phone for these. The one exception is a quiz you choose to generate, which is uploaded so other readers can take it.
Kindle and Amazon links
When you tap a "Read on Kindle" link, you are taken to Amazon's website, which sets its own cookies under Amazon's privacy policy. Literary Atlas earns a small commission on qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you.
Website visits
This website uses GoatCounter to count visits in aggregate: which pages are viewed and roughly where visitors come from. It sets no cookies, builds no visitor profile, and does not follow you to other sites. See GoatCounter's privacy policy.
3. What we do not collect
- We do not collect your location. The map shows where books are set, not where you are.
- We do not build advertising profiles and we do not sell, rent or trade your data.
- We do not use third-party analytics or advertising SDKs. Usage is measured with our own database, and the website only counts visits without cookies.
- We do not track you across other apps or websites.
- We do not read the books you import.
4. How we use your data
- To provide the service: your account, your library and progress across devices, Premium entitlement, and the alerts you asked for.
- To improve the app: usage events and error reports tell us what works and what breaks.
- To answer you: your email address lets us reply to support requests, and, only if you opted in, send occasional news.
We use your data for nothing else.
5. Who else sees data
We rely on a small number of providers to run the app:
- Supabase hosts sign-in, the database, the Premium cloud library, usage events and error reports, on Amazon Web Services. See the Supabase privacy policy.
- Apple for Sign in with Apple, App Store distribution and Premium payments, under Apple's privacy policy.
- Google for Sign in with Google and, on Android, Google Play distribution and payments, under Google's privacy policy.
- Expo delivers push notifications for new books and authors, if you allow them. See the Expo privacy policy.
- Amazon, only when you choose to follow a "Read on Kindle" link.
We may disclose information if required by law or to protect our legal rights.
6. Data retention
Your account data is kept for as long as your account exists. When you delete your account, your profile, library, progress, posts, subscription record and push token are removed at once, and the cloud copies of your books within 30 days. Usage events and error reports are detached from your account when it is deleted and expire on their own schedule: 180 days for usage events, at most 90 days for error reports.
7. Your rights
Depending on where you live you may have the right to access, correct, export or delete your personal data. To exercise any of these:
- Delete your account at any time from Account › Delete account inside the app, or from the account deletion page if you no longer have the app.
- Email boris.prosper@gmail.com for anything else. We reply within 30 days.
8. Children
Literary Atlas is rated 12+ on the App Store and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly create accounts for them. Kids Mode is a setting on an adult's account that pins texts to a younger reading level and hides comments and store links; it does not create a child profile or collect anything about a child. If you believe a child has given us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
9. Security
Your data is protected by row-level access rules in our database: only you, signed in to your own account, can read what is yours, and your cloud library lives in a private bucket under the same rule. Everything travels over an encrypted connection. No internet transmission is completely secure, and you are responsible for keeping your sign-in details confidential.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app changes. Material changes are noted on this page and in the app's release notes, and the effective date above always reflects the latest revision. Continued use of the app after a change means you accept the updated policy.
