Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Fyodor Dostoyevsky was born in Moscow in 1821, the son of a strict doctor who worked at a hospital for the poor. As a boy he watched sick and struggling people through the windows, and that pity for the desperate never left him. He trained as an engineer but wanted only to write. His first book, Poor Folk, made him famous in his mid-twenties.
