Rabindranath Tagore

Rabindranath Tagore was born in 1861 in Calcutta into a large and gifted Bengali family that loved music, art, and ideas. He started writing poems as a boy and never really stopped. He wrote in Bengali, his mother tongue, and he wrote a great deal: poems and songs, plays and short stories, and novels. His voice is gentle and searching. He looks at rivers and gardens, at children and God, with the same close and tender attention.
