About
Jalal al-Din Rumi was born in 1207 in the wider Persian world, in what is now Afghanistan or Tajikistan. Tradition names Balkh, though many scholars favour nearby Wakhsh. His father was a respected preacher and scholar, and when Mongol armies pushed west, the family fled. After years of travel they settled in Konya, a city in Anatolia (modern Turkey). Rumi grew into a learned teacher of Islamic law, respected and settled.
