Albert Camus was born in 1913 in French Algeria, into a poor family. His father died in World War I when Albert was an infant. His mother, who was partly deaf and could barely read, raised him in a cramped Algiers apartment. A teacher spotted his talent and helped him reach the university, where he studied philosophy. Tuberculosis dogged him for life and cut short his days as a goalkeeper on a local team.
