Alexander Pushkin was born in Moscow in 1799 into a noble family. His great-grandfather was Abram Gannibal, an African brought to Russia and raised at the court of the reforming tsar Peter the Great, and Pushkin was proud of that heritage. As a boy he read widely in French and Russian, and he began writing poems while still at school. His verse quickly won him fame.
