Charlotte Brontë was born in 1816 in Thornton, in Yorkshire. Her father was a clergyman, and in 1820 the family moved to the parsonage in Haworth on the edge of the wild moors. Charlotte's mother died when she was young, and two of her older sisters died of illness after being sent away to a harsh school. That loss marked her deeply, and she later wrote about cruel schools in her fiction.
