Giovanni Boccaccio was born in 1313, probably in or near Florence, the son of a merchant who worked for a powerful banking family. His father sent him to Naples to learn business and law, but young Boccaccio spent his time reading poetry instead. Naples was a lively court city, and there he began to write. When he returned to Florence, he found a world about to be turned upside down.
