Joseph Conrad was born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski in 1857, in a part of Poland then ruled by the Russian Empire. His parents were Polish patriots, and both died when he was a boy because political exile had broken their health. Orphaned and restless, he went to sea at sixteen. For the next twenty years he sailed the world's oceans, working his way up to master mariner in the British merchant navy. English was his third language, after Polish and French, yet he chose to write his books in it.
