About
George Orwell was born Eric Arthur Blair in India in 1903, the son of a minor British official. He grew up in England, won a scholarship to Eton, then chose an odd path for a clever young man. He joined the Imperial Police in Burma. He hated the work, because it made him an agent of an empire he came to despise. So he quit to become a writer.
