Luís de Camões was Portugal's greatest poet, and much of his life reads like the voyages he wrote about. He was born around 1524, probably in Lisbon, into a family of the minor nobility. He knew the royal court, but he also knew trouble. After a street brawl in which he wounded a court official, he was jailed. He was then released on the condition that he sail for the East.
